About Hannah Materne Freelance

Hannah.jpg

Hannah Materne Freelance aims to brighten. I see a future where the human environment is closer to the joy, peace and whimsy of the natural world. Can design flourish among the constraints and challenges of the real world, the way species adapt in ingenious way? I believe it can. HMF uses care-dense design and art to bring a spark to your day.

I offer contract-based graphic design and illustration work in the areas of branding + logo, booklet, packaging, information design, textile design and art direction. Feel free to contact me about your project, or just to touch base with a designer!

A bit more about me - I grew up in Toronto and now call Montréal home. (N'hésitez pas à me parler en français!) I love pastel colours, hiking and finding the right word for a feeling. If I'm not in my studio you can find me on the soccer field, borrowing travel guides from the library or fermenting something. I make a mean moss garden.

Artist Statement

Hannah Materne is a freelance designer and artist based in Montréal, QC. Her practice is deeply influenced by her experience at her rural Ontario cottage, and concerns itself with changes to the mind, the body and the built environment from this island to the city. Her work is poetic, and retains the meditative qualities of the land as a remedy to the anxiety of the city. Temporality, analogy and pattern are continuously explored to overlap her cottage-being with her city-self in the most comfortable way possible.

Materne holds a BFA in Design from Concordia University. She is a member of the Loyola College of Diversity and Sustainability and was a finalist for the 2015 Association des Designers Industriels du Québec (ADIQ) award for her public space redesign project Wavespace. Materne has presented at Detroit Future City in Detroit, MI and interned at Bruce Mau Design’s Toronto office.
